History of DRETM
The Department of Railway Construction and Track Management is one of the oldest specialized departments of the University of Žilina. The current structure is a direct continuation of the original two departments, namely the Department of Railway Construction and the Department of Track Management, which were part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Railways since its establishment in Prague in 1953. The pedagogical and scientific activities of these departments resulted from the then requirements of the Department of Transport and had its roots in the Department of Railway Construction of Czech Technical University Prague, whose employees formed the basis of educators providing teaching in disciplines dealing with the design, construction and maintenance of railway lines and stations and track management. At this time, when the University of Railways in Prague was established, the need to strengthen the quality of the teaching staff with new important experts with greater practical experience became apparent, which was accomplished by hiring new top experts from the transport department to the teaching staff of both departments.
Many of the teachers working at the Railway College, which expanded to the Transport College in 1959, continued to work at the department even after the school moved to Žilina (in 1960-1962) and worked at the new workplace until retirement.
Among the first important experts who worked in the starting departments are:
- prof. Ing. Dr. Ferdinand Klimeš, DrSc., worked in Prague at the Department of Railway Construction,
- prof. Ing. Dr. Zbyněk Jirsák, DrSc., worked in Prague and Žilina until his retirement at the Department of Railway Construction,
- prof. Ing. Dr. Gustáv Kasík, he worked in Prague and Žilina until his retirement at the Department of Railway Management,
- prof. Ing. Gustáv Kodr, worked in Žilina until his retirement at the Department of Railway Construction,
- doc. Ing. František Jindráček, he worked in Prague and Žilina until his retirement at the Department of Railway Management.
Other unnamed former employees should also be mentioned for their contribution in ensuring the high professional level of graduates since the establishment of the University of Transport in Prague and especially after its relocation from Prague to Žilina.
