History of the Department

The Department of Structures and Bridges was established in 1980 by merging the Department of Building Structures and the Department of Bridges. However, both departments were founded at the Railway University in Prague (former Czechoslovakia) in 1953 as profile departments of the then Faculty of Civil Engineering. Therefore, in 2023 we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the department.

The department covers teaching the theory of structures, such as steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures. Regarding research activities, the department focuses on research into the real behaviour of steel and concrete building structures and bridges and problems related to the evaluation of existing structures and bridges.
